Ecocem’s Environmental Policy

As a leader in the production of the lowest carbon cement, we are committed to comply with applicable legal requirements and with other requirements; we are committed to the protection of the environment and focused on minimising any adverse impacts that result from our activities.

We manage all aspects of our environmental impact through comprehensive policies around Green House Gas Emissions, Transport, Stakeholder Engagement, Materials Resource, Waste and Water Efficiency and Responsible Sourcing.Protecting the environment is at the core of Ecocem’s ethos. Not only is our product sustainable our business practices are too. We are an ISO 14001 certified company and have implemented policies across the company to lower our impact on the environment.

We are a participant of the Carbon Disclosure Project in Ireland and have third party verified life cycle analysis and environmental product declaration for all our products. We have annual environmental targets in place which are monitored and updated regularly.


Ecocem adopt a purchasing policy to favour suppliers and contractors that adopt best environmental practices.

Waste Management

Ecocem continue to promote, develop and implement waste prevention, reduction, re-use and recycling on-site in a systematic and cost effective manner. We will use appropriately regulated waste management contractors to ensure safe management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste sent off-site in accordance with best environmental practice.

We will work closely with our suppliers and customers towards achieving our environmental policy claims.

Ecocem’s Greenhouse Gases Policy

Ecocem Ireland recognises the importance of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with its activities from acquisition of materials and production of its product. By addressing emissions along its supply chain, the company seeks to mitigate against impacts, through identifying how the organisation copes with threats arising from climate change, highlighting the business opportunities available, and enhancing its ability to increase efficiency and reduce unnecessary costs. The use of Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag by consumers reduces the embodied carbon of end-materials by virtue of its nature as an industrial by-product. In addition, Ecocem has committed to reducing its operations to net zero carbon emissions from its operations by supplementing its GHG reductions strategies.

To achieve this, the organisation will operate/undertake the following to demonstrate a policy that:
– Is fair and comprehensive in approach, reaching all aspects of the supply chain, including imports
– Balances emission reductions with the economic impact to the consumer
– Evaluates low-carbon opportunities for the production of its product
– Improves energy efficiency and conservation at our facilities
– Pursues recovery projects that will help mitigate CO2 emissions
– Sets environmental targets that directly impact the level of GHG emissions from production

Greenhouse Gas Inventory

In pursuance of the above goals, Ecocem Ireland maintains an organisational GHG inventory in accordance with the requirements of BS ISO 14064-1. This inventory ensures transparency while monitoring the progress of environmental objectives. It is a corporate goal of Ecocem Ireland to obtain a Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declaration in line with EN 15804 for all products and encourage the creation of EPD’s with all its customers.

Ecocem Ireland measure and report their annual Carbon Emissions to the Board of Management and across the overall Ecocem Materials group. Ecocem Ireland will strive to monitor and update their carbon footprint and make publically available the most up to date Life Cycle Information regarding Ozone Layer Depletion and Global Warming as well as all other impact categories. Ecocem Ireland also participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a voluntary emissions reporting project on an annual basis. The CDP provides a means by which Ecocem Ireland can increase transparency and awareness with increased transparency to shareholders, clients and the public audience.

Ecocem’s Material Resource Efficiency Policy

Ecocem Ireland recognises the increasing importance of the efficient use of resources in the construction product industry, and the corresponding requirement for material resource efficiency as a key consideration at all stages of the product manufacturing process. Such concerns reflect wider social development, economic regeneration and environmental protection issues.

As part of its commitment to sustainable construction product manufacture, Ecocem Ireland aims to increase its efficiency in the use of material resources, helping minimise waste to landfill, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment. The product is made by upcycling an industrial by-product, therefore increasing the recycled content of the final product. Its properties extend the life of construction structures also, thus reducing demand for replacement materials and the associated environmental impacts caused by their extraction and processing.

To achieve this, the organisation will operate/undertake the following to demonstrate a policy that:

– Prioritises the use of renewable materials over non-renewable materials, implemented through procurement, e.g. maximising GGBS proportions within blended cement product within allowable tolerances
– Seeks to reduce wastage of constituent materials where possible
– Maximises the material recovered from the waste streams leaving the site
– Sustainably disposes of surplus materials
– Seek from supply chain organisations proof of environmental stewardship on site, including measures to minimise use of resources, and to protect the natural heritage, biodiversity and geodiversity on site, both during operation and after end of life of the site.

Ecocem’s Transport Policy

Ecocem Ireland aim to ensure that the constituent materials used within the delivery of services and products to our clients are sourced in a manner which addresses and reduces the adverse social and environmental effects of transport at all stages along the transport chain.

Transport is a vital component of the Ecocem business model as the required industrial by-products used in the process are required to be sourced from abroad as there exists no indigenous industries from which to source. In addition, cementitious blending materials may be required to be sourced from abroad at times depending on market rates and other economic factors. Ecocem therefore recognises the importance of addressing global environmental issues associated with transportation, and shall strive to comply with all environmental legislation, as well as implementing improvements along its transport chain. Transportation aspects are under constant review, and include:

– Restriction of land-based transport by strategic sourcing of materials from port-based suppliers, and emphasis on bulk sales to customers in order to minimise journeys.
– Ecocem only deliver in full loads wherever possible
– Ecocem outsource their transport. Environmental factors are studied carefully and weigh considerably on transporter choice, and issues such as fuel consumption of fleet and maximum load capacity are material decisions in procurement of same.
– All vehicles should comply with road legislation, and that they are adequately insured and maintained in a roadworthy condition.
– Transport of deliveries from docks to the production plant prioritises conveyor and internal haulage roads in preference to the public highway.
– The carbon footprint of the import of significant quantities of raw materials by sea is mitigated by measuring and monitoring the percentage laden capacity of shipments on an on-going basis, ensuring empty running is avoided if possible, and monitoring the carbon intensity of vessels. Ecocem liaises with its chosen shipping suppliers regarding such issues on a regular basis. Larger vessel capacity is a target for the company to reduce the amount of trips taken throughout the year.
– Ecocem operates a policy of developing products tailored for sale and use primarily within the Irish marketplace, therefore increasing economic viability whilst simultaneously minimising environmental pollution.
– Ecocem staff are required to calculate the carbon footprint of any transport used during the carrying out of their work.

Ecocem’s Waste Management Policy

Ecocem Ireland recognises that waste management is an important element within a responsible and sustainable business model, and will adopt the principles of the ‘best practicable environmental option’ in the delivery of its waste management policy. To this end, Ecocem will apply a ‘waste hierarchical approach’, to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover waste products in preference to the disposal of waste to landfill.

All those who produce or handle wastes from demolition and construction activities have legal responsibilities – a duty of care.

Ecocem Ireland recognises the importance of meeting these legal requirements and managing its waste responsibly in order to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill and maximise reuse and recycling where possible.

In accordance with the Policy Statement, Ecocem will fulfil the following policy Objectives:

– To ensure that waste management is performed in accordance with all waste legislative requirements, including the duty of care, and to plan for future legislative changes and to mitigate their effects.
– To minimise waste generation at source and facilitate repair, reuse and recycling over the disposal of wastes, where it is cost effective.
– To measure waste arising’s associated with the acquisition of raw materials, and manufacture of its products.
– To provide clearly defined roles and responsibilities to identify and co-ordinate each activity within the waste management chain.
-To promote environmental awareness in order to increase and encourage waste minimisation, reuse and recycling.
– To ensure the safe handling and storage of wastes at the plant and offices.
– To provide appropriate training for staff, contractors and other relevant third parties on waste management issues.
– To promote industry waste management best practice.
– To appoint competent person(s) to provide waste management advice.

Ecocem’s use of industrial by-products demonstrates a commitment to re-use in its processes.

Ecocem’s Water Management Policy

Ecocem Ireland uses a very little water within its processes. The company recognises the environmental effects associated with industrial usage of water, including the depletion of aquatic resources and greenhouse gases caused as a result of treatment of wastewater. It is therefore company policy to seek ways to maintain its low water usage of water. To achieve this we will:

– Regularly review opportunities for reduction of mains water consumption.
– Install water efficient fittings and technology where economic and practical.
– Provide specifications and briefing documents for new developments aimed at low mains water consumption.

The environmental effects of water use is a priority within the industry. A pragmatic method to address it, and consequently to mitigate climate change and reduce water consumption, involves setting ‘good practice’ and achievable targets. While good design of water systems will reduce the amount of water used by Ecocem Ireland, the input and actions of staff will have most influence on the usage of water within the process and office environments.

The company will regularly monitor water use with frequent meter readings which will enable a rapid response to potential leaks in the system before damage, excessive use and expense occurs.

As Ecocem Ireland uses such a small amount of water there are very few reductions to be made therefore no targets need to be set in this area.

Ecocem Ireland has therefore set the following general principles to its operations:

– To ensure new development, upgrades and refurbishments are carried out with due consideration to potential water saving measures.
– To encourage staff to be conscious of their water consumption and reduce where possible.
– To maintain our zero usage of water during production.
